She lived in perhaps the most magnificent castles in Greek mythology. Unlike her counterpart Hera, Queen of Mount Olympus in the sky, Persephone had significant power in the Underworld. This power of hers is in perfect harmony of the notion of her being the personification of vegetation.Īs the co-ruler of the Underworld, Persephone made several important decisions concerning the souls of the dead. Whenever she was on earth, the days were warmer and farmers had bountiful harvest. Persephone’s importance in the Greek pantheon stems from the myth that her presence on earth makes flowers bloom. Other symbols of Persephone include the narcissus flower and cornucopia (also known as the horn of plenty), a representation of her role as a fertility deity. The ancient Greeks believed that pomegranate was used to mark her marriage to Hades in the Underworld. In some cases, it is the seed of a pomegranate rather. Of all the symbols associated with Persephone, the pomegranate is the commonest. In the Eleusinian Mysteries, Demeter is depicted carrying a four-tipped torch. However, in the presence of her mother Demeter, the honor of carrying the scepter and sheaf of wheat went to Demeter. And to symbolize her position in the Underworld, she can be seen carrying a scepter and a sheaf of wheat. She is often depicted wearing a beautiful robe. In almost all cases, Persephone was seen as the queen of the Underworld – the dominion of Greek god Hades. The latter epithet is a testament to the unbreakable bond between Demeter and Persephone – a bond of cosmic proportions between mother and daughter. Owing to her close relationship with her mother Demeter, some of her worshipers took to calling the two deities “the Two Demeters” or “The Two Goddesses”. However, she did have some positive epithets such as “the Maiden”, “the Venerable One”, “the Mistress” ( Despoina), and “The Pure One”. Only those in her cult could speak her real name. In some cases, it was even forbidden to utter her name. After all, her husband was the ruler of the dead. The name was most likely derived from the Latin word “proserpere”, which means “to spring up” or “to creep forth”.īeing the wife of Hades, many Greeks maintained a reasonable amount of fear of her. In ancient Rome, she was called Proserpine. For example, her name “Kore” means “the maiden” or “the girl”. The ancient Greeks had different names for Persephone. What symbols were associated with Persephone? And because she was the daughter of Demeter, the Greek goddess of grain and agriculture, Persephone was revered as a fertility goddess. Her role in the Greek pantheon was to preside over the dead souls in the Underworld. After she was taken against her will by Hades, the Greek god of the Underworld, Persephone went on to become the Queen of the Underworld. Among her well-connected guests was Tommy Hilton, who eventually added the drink to the bar menu at his hotel chain.Īccording to The Complete Book of Spiritsby Anthony Dias Blue, though, the first importer of Jose Cuervo in the United States advertised with the tagline, "Margarita: it's more than a girl's name," in 1945, three years before Sames claimed to have invented the drink. To make the liquor more palatable to his fussy client, he combined the elements of a traditional tequila shot-a lick of salt and a wedge of lime-and turned them into a refreshing drink.Īnother top contender for the inventor title is Margarita Sames, a wealthy Dallas socialite who claimed she whipped up the drink for friends at her Acapulco vacation home in 1948. As the legend goes, Herrera dreamed up the cocktail for one of his customers, an aspiring actress named Marjorie King who was allergic to all hard alcohol other than tequila. One of the most prevalent stories is that Carlos "Danny" Herrera developed the drink at his Tijuana-area restaurant, Rancho La Gloria, around 1938. In its classic form-tequila, lime juice and Cointreau or Triple Sec, served in a glass with a salted rim-it is a perfect combination of sweet, salty, sour and bitter.Īs with so many popular things, more than one person has claimed to have invented the margarita. Patrick's Day is a much bigger deal to Irish expatriates and their descendants than it is in Ireland, Cinco de Mayo festivities have become a popular way for Mexican-Americans to celebrate their cultural heritage.Ĭinco de Mayo or not, it's always a good time to toast one of Mexico's most beloved exports, the margarita. Some makers specifically concoct their beverages so you can crack them open and go, while others ask for you to pour them over ice. This will vary from producer to producer. That said, avoid storing it in a light-filled spot-the UV rays can damage the flavors.Ĭan you drink out of the container, or do you have to add something to it? If you purchased this commercially, your ready-to-drink Margarita should be shelf-stable, meaning you can keep it on a shelf until it's ready to drink. How do you properly store ready-to-drink Margaritas? For the record, tequila needs to be from a specific region to be called a tequila, so if it has that title, you know it did originate in Mexico. Some producers rely on neutral grain spirits while others work with tequila distilleries, but unless otherwise disclosed, all of these products have real tequila. Your body will thank you the next day.įAQs Do ready-to-drink Margaritas have real tequila added? Look for options that lean on agave or cane sugar to sweeten, rather than fake sweeteners. But the best options balance out the sugar with natural flavors. Many cocktail fans sway away from canned options as they can be cloyingly sweet. Just how tipsy are you looking to get at the beach? The ABV of ready-to-drink Margaritas can vary wildly, from a mere 4 percent to a knee-buckling 30 percent. Citric acid can help this-it’s a compound found in lemons that can be added to cocktails to retain that freshness of citrus for far longer. Citrus goes badly or tastes tinny if not stored correctly. If your canned cocktail doesn’t taste fresh, citrus likely is to blame. What to Look for in a Ready-To-Drink Margarita Citrus If you prefer to build out the drink yourself, Hella Cocktail Co’s ( view at Amazon) offerings pack in all the ingredients with none of the tequila, so you can use your favorite bottle (or sub out a non-alcoholic spirit). Crafthouse Cocktails ( view at Drizly) and Cutwater Spirits (view at Total Wine) both do an excellent job of mimicking bartender-concocted flavors desired in a Margarita and packaging them into an easy-to-drink canned format. No, she replied there may be a handful who were popular in high school … but they’re not popular at McMurdo. I presented her my hypothesis that no one at McMurdo was popular in high school. Or so it would seem.Īt midnight on my last day there, I had a deep conversation with someone I’d only met in passing before, but who was totally down to have a long talk with a random stranger on a footbridge in the middle of the night. When you come out the other side of self-aggrandisement and jockeying for status, and are happy just to be yourself and let others be themselves, you get a happy, harmonious society. Power? He had power.“ So Cherry wrote about Wilson in 1948, but many modern Antarcticans might sympathise. "Glory? He knew it for a bubble: he had proved himself to himself. Perhaps what unites Antarcticans is an awareness of what really matters, when you get right down to it: they’ve played the game enough to see through it, and are done with it. There is a bit of a running gag in Where’d You Go, Bernadette? that everyone doing a mundane job in Antarctica is a high achiever in something amazing, who left it all behind – and that’s not exactly untrue. You go the third time because you don’t belong anywhere else.” Many of them live in remote places, or travel, or do itinerant work when not on the Ice. You go the second time to relive the first time. A few years ago, I came across this adage from an Antarctic veteran: “You go the first time for the adventure. They tend to be types that exist on the fringes back in The World and, like me, may struggle to conform to its values. There is no denying that everyone there is a bit odd. I suspect there is an element of self-selection – something about the sort of person who would want to go to Antarctica correlates with a certain mindset, one that gels extremely well with others who share it, however different they may be in other respects. Is it because a harsh environment triggers something in the human psyche to support each other, rather than compete? Maybe, but these people seem like they’d be solid wherever they are, and were like that before going South. Is it because they’re scientists, as someone theorised? But they’re not – most of the people at McMurdo are support staff, working in the kitchen or waste disposal or shuttle fleet helping the science happen, yes, but that’s not necessarily why they’re there, personally. It was a wonderful surprise to discover that they would not be out of place amongst their modern counterparts. Warm, genuine, accepting of and attentive to each other, a wide range of personalities and dispositions that nevertheless got on and functioned together as a society, in the face of environmental and emotional extremes … I needed to know such people were possible, and clung to them as an ideal. One of the main things that attracted me to the Terra Nova story, and has kept me committed to it for so long, was how wonderful the people were – far outside what I had come to expect from humanity. In my first days there, my supervisor joked that if you shake the world, all the best people end up at the bottom the remainder of my time there proved how right she was. It turned out that the best thing about McMurdo was, in fact, those very people I had been afraid of. Not knowing who ‘herself’ was, I took this with a grain of salt, but it was an encouraging answer nonetheless. She responded that, speaking purely from her own experience, she had never felt more comfortable being herself than when she was at McMurdo. When I was shortlisted for the placement, the person handling the admin briefed me about the process and asked me if I had any further questions, and I raised this concern. I don’t know how to deflect the ire of people who’ve taken a set against me – and, for whatever reason, I tend to rub people in the States the wrong way. Sure, the continent wants to kill you, and every way of getting to and around it comes with risk of serious accident, but the only thing I was actually afraid of was finding myself in a stressful social situation and not having any recourse to escape. Whether it was school or work, a recurring motif in my life is that I do not do well in a big box full of Americans, and that is, almost literally, exactly what McMurdo is. My biggest anxiety about going to McMurdo was the human factor. I may not have used my sketchbook as much as I thought I would, with regard to locations, but I did fill a few pages with one of my favourite pastimes back in The World: people sketching. |
